Career narrative
The foundation was tactile: graphic design at Maine College of Art. The client work started while I was still there and carried on after — designing for photographer Horst Hamann, known for vertical cityscapes shot primarily on Hasselblad, and for the photography behind Lauryn Hill's 1999 video for “Everything Is Everything.” I designed his websites and a few of his books, including New York. Working to an eye that exacting taught me early that a constraint is not something a composition survives — it is what gives it shape.
Then a decade as the sole web designer on the Change Healthcare development team — owning design, build, ship, and support for a regulated healthcare audience.
In 2017 I crossed to the other side of the handoff, spending five years as a full-stack engineer on the LibertyMutual.com agile team to understand how design decisions survive the development process. That changed everything. I stopped designing artifacts and started designing systems engineers could adopt.
Clarest Health is where it all came together: I audited a clinical platform fragmented by years of rotating design teams and built Promenade, the design system and Vue component library it now runs on end-to-end — cutting time on key pharmacist tasks by more than half.
Threaded through it all: blocSonic, my Creative Commons label since 2007, and two decades of print and web work for Chuck D and Public Enemy.
Lately: Protosmyth Forge, my Claude Code plugin that makes the design system structured input the model reads from instead of something it approximates.
Now I'm looking for a team pushing what design looks like in 2026 — one that treats accessibility as a first principle and a designer who ships code as an asset, not a contradiction.
