In 2017 I moved to the other side of the handoff. As a full-stack software engineer on the LibertyMutual.com agile team, I wrote React and Sass day-to-day, shipped the YAML based content system, ran data-driven SEO and A/B testing iterations with the Product Owner, and practiced test-driven JavaScript. Just as importantly, I worked with the UX team from the engineering side on user testing, persona development, and journey mapping — watching how research becomes code, and where it gets lost in between.
I wanted to understand how design decisions survive the development process. That experience changed everything. I stopped designing artifacts and started designing systems engineers could adopt.
